Are you sitting comfortably?

Most people do not even consider the importance of good posture or taking regular breaks when using computers, that is until they start to suffer with back pain, headaches or sore eyes. There are laws in place to protect workers from computer related injuries, so if the government and employers are taking the matter seriously, you should too.

Here is a list of health and safety tips to make working at your desk an enjoyable and pain free experience:

Using Monitors:
The monitor should be positioned so that your eyes are at the same level as the top of the monitor.
You need to be sat about 18 to 24 inches away from the screen.
Adjust the brightness and contrast controls on your monitor.
Keep your monitor screen clean.
Try repositioning your desk or using a blind if you have sunlight shining on your screen, as this can make it difficult to see your monitor.

Keyboard and Mouse:
Make sure that your keyboard and mouse are at the same level.
Do not grip your mouse too tightly, as this will make your hand ache.

Good Posture:
You need a good office chair, one that is adjustable and will support your back.
Make sure that the height of the chair is such that you can place your feet on the floor, your arms should be level with the desk. When you have a good posture you will feel comfortable, if not adjust your chair until you are.
Your desk needs to be large enough for you to have space to work and there needs to be enough legroom under your desk.

Take a Break:
It is important to take regular breaks from working at your computer, a few minutes every hour. You could change your activity for a few minutes by doing some photocopying, filing or go and make yourself a coffee.

Laptops:
Laptops are great because they are portable but from a health point of view they are not as good as a desktop PC. The keyboard is small and the mouse on a laptop can be very difficult to use, also most users do not sit at a desk or on an office chair. If you are going to be using a laptop for a long period of time, you need to be sat at a desk on an office chair and the laptop should be housed in a docking station. This will allow you to use a normal keyboard, mouse and a larger monitor.

Your health is important, so try out the steps above and see what a difference it makes. This is not just for people who work in an office but also for home users as well.
